My only complaint about my LG G Watch R is that I have too much battery left at the end of the day :). I tried using the Wear Mini Launcher to lock my watch into active mode all the time, but that resulted in ~50% battery drain within 2-3 hours, which is too far in the other direction.

I think a happy medium might be if I could increase the screen brightness of the ambient/dim mode. Is there any way to do that?

Looking at some watch face sample code, it seems that most onAmbientModeChanged callbacks don't mess with screen brightness, so I'm guessing ambient mode brightness is actually controlled by the Android framework, which probably means there's no way to do this at the moment... :(
