Are Google Fit steps counted on an LG G Watch when your phone isn't in your pocket?

I just purchased a LG G watch and don't want to leave my phone in my pocket while playing football. I have looked elsewhere and all that I can find is that the LG G Watch has a step counter, but can anyone confirm that this will work toward the daily goals in Fit?
