Is Android Wear too limited with its square form-factor? [Discussion]
2:30 PMI've been thinking it over lately, and I think that Android Wear has kind of shot itself in the foot by only supporting square dimensions.
Think of the Gear Fit and the Gear S. They are both non-square form factors, and for that reason Android Wear wouldn't work on them.
I understand the reasoning, to a degree. Think of how awkward a single card would look on a 27:8 form factor, stupidly silly. Developers would need to work extra hard to make their cards look good on different screen sizes. The square is consistent and allows you to develop for squares and circles at the same time.
I just feel a little worried that the software restricting the form factor will restrict the physical market as a whole. I don't think we'll see a more functional, flexible version of the "Gear Fit" running Android Wear, which is a shame. This technology could bring a new definition to the modern watch.
Finally, I'd like to say that this isn't just my personal preference. In fact, I'm wearing a G Watch and it looks great with the leather band I put on it. The Asus Zenwatch is also looking really great, I think it may be my next choice. I'm more speaking for those with thin wrists or who don't like the look of a "classical watch" form factor. Thoughts?
