What's with the lack of usable apps?

I know that Android Wear is still considerably new, but one of the things I'm disappointed about is that most of the apps seem passive in design. It seems like everything is slaved to your phone, even though Android Wear smartwatches are obviously more capable than that and can act as standalone devices.

Do you guys know what I mean? So far, I've found three apps that I can actually use, which are My Headlines (RSS app), Wear Reader (e-book reader), and tweetwear (Twitter). I enjoy these apps because you can actually request data/information rather than wait for your smartphone to provide it. However, their functionality is so basic that I am already wishing for alternatives.

I only thought of this while writing this post, but is it because AW doesn't support a high-speed, standalone way of receiving data yet (i.e., Wi-Fi)? Do you think we will see AW apps blow up after it receives this capability?
